Roof Restoration in Rangeville
Along the range edge
Rangeville lies 5 kilometres south-east of the city centre, and its eastern boundary runs along the top of the Great Dividing Range. Wikipedia says rainfall in the eastern suburbs along the range nudges 1,000 millimetres a year, against a city average of 735. Ask a restorer what extra wetness means for ridge pointing and moss.
Mount Tabletop
Mount Tabletop, also called Meewah and formerly One Tree Hill, is one of four reserves on the eastern edge of the suburb. The Battle of One Tree Hill took place there in September 1843. Homes close to open reserves can be exposed to wind. Ask each restorer how they judge exposure when they check ridges and sheet edges.
A flagpole and lookouts
Picnic Point Park has several lookouts, a restaurant and a bar, and a 150-foot flagpole was raised there for the Q150 celebrations. Heritage listings in the suburb include Geeumbi at 1 South Street, Rodway at 2 South Street and Picnic Point. If your house is listed, ask the council and the restorer what a roof job would need.
A name from the range
Wikipedia says the suburb seems to have been named Rangeville to tell it apart from The Range, the general name for the area along the Great Dividing Range. The Range State School opened on 1 July 1909 and became Rangeville State School that December. Houses from the early decades may have older roofing, so ask for a close inspection.
Churches and schools
Rangeville Methodist Church opened in 1912, and St Joseph's College opened in 1956 with 116 boys. Rangeville State School, with 732 students in 2017, serves the suburb. School mornings are busy, so ask a restorer when the crew arrives and where a skip or lift will stand. Ask for the answer on the quote.
East Creek on the western edge
The western boundary follows East Creek, where the Toowoomba Bicentennial Waterbird Habitat lies. Toowoomba's flash flood of 10 January 2011 dropped 149.6 millimetres in a day. Roofs are not where floods start, but gutters and downpipes carry the run-off. Ask whether gutters, downpipes and outlets are checked and cleaned in the price.
Ridges before paint
One national guide puts rebedding and repointing of ridge and hip caps at $35 to $60 per linear metre, and says that ridge work is what keeps water out, while paint only makes a roof look new. Ask each restorer how many metres of ridge are in the quote and whether the valleys will also be inspected.
Safety on the roof
The airport station has recorded a gust of 111 kilometres an hour, and the guide says roof work with a fall risk above two metres needs fall protection. Ask who supplies the edge protection, whether the price includes it, and who decides to stop when the wind rises.
Mount Tabletop
Mount Tabletop, also called Meewah, Table Top Mountain and formerly One Tree Hill, is reached from a dirt car park off Stevenson Street. In September 1843 the Battle of One Tree Hill took place there, when Aboriginal warriors under Multuggerah ambushed a party of 18 armed men. At Picnic Point, a 150 foot flagpole was raised for the Q150 celebrations.
